USB 3.1 Type C – already euipped for the next USB-generation

In November 2014, as one of the first providers worldwide W+P placed the new USB 3.1 Type C connector in a horizontal version on the market. Today, W+P is even extending this series with a vertical version and thus broadens the designs of printed circuit boards with numerous options for the most current USB 3.1 Super Speed Plus Standard.

The USB 3.1 Type C connectors convince with a very fast data transfer rate of 10 Gbit/s and various other advantages: They support the USB-Power-Delivery-Standard as well as the USB-Audio/Video-Standard. Meaning that via the same plug system power up to 100 Watt can be transferred as well as video data in Ultra HD-Standard. So the USB 3.1 system has the potential of becoming the universal data transmission system in the future.

The clou concerning the new Type C USB-connector: Not only has it been developed to match the new USB 3.1 Super Speed Plus Standards with a data transfer rate of 10 Gbit/s, but also with the aim to be used with the new developments of the USB-Standards in the coming 15 years. To match the coming standards, it has been equipped with 24 contacts.

The vertical version of the USB 3.1 Type C connector series 8320 is available as  SMT-connector with a housing height of 9.4mm. The contact material consists of a copper alloy with a gold plated surface above a nickel barrier layer, the insulator material of a thermoplastic resin according to UL94 V-0.

Safe functioning is guaranteed in a temperature range of -40°C up to +85°C.
